Emily Kief

Originally from Lakeville, Minnesota, Emily spent her undergraduate years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she double majored in Biology and Anthropology, while her free time was mainly spent sketching. Following this, she spent a year and a half in the Biological pre-Medical Illustration program at Iowa State University before applying to the BVIS Graduate program at UIC.

Currently, Emily is exploring a variety of media in BVIS while looking forward to a TA-ship for an evolutionary biology class. As the focus of her undergraduate degree, evolutionary biology is her area of greatest scientific expertise – particularly in relation to biologic anthropology and paleobiology. However, since joining the program at UIC she has really enjoyed the theory behind visual learning and thinking, and was fond of the more problem-solving based assignments such as storyboarding for animation.

Emily is particularly interested in humor and entertainment in science education, particularly involving new or unconventional media such as comics, games, and other interactive tools and intends to help inspire future science-enthusiasts. With a long seated interest in natural history, she is also greatly interested in museum science and plans to continue to pursue that in the future as well.
