Health information management professionals protect the privacy and ensure the integrity of the most confidential patient data, including medical histories, lab test reports, diagnoses, treatment plans, insurance information, medications and the notes of doctors and nurses. They are a critical link between doctors, insurance providers and patients, working in accordance with the medical, administrative, ethical and legal requirements of today’s sensitive environment for health information.

As experts in the field of patient information and medical records, registered health information administrators (RHIAs) help develop information systems for:

  • quality patient care
  • facility reimbursement
  • medical research
  • health planning

The UIC post-baccalaureate certificate of degree program offers a pathway to the HIM profession for prospective students that hold a previously earned baccalaureate degree or higher from an academic institution accredited by an institutional accreditor recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE). This is because the courses are a subset of the CAHIIM-Accredited bachelor’s degree. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Exam.

The post-baccalaureate certificate in health information management has been approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. IBHE certificates require the completion of more semester hours than campus certificates. IBHE students are classified as degree-seeking, making them eligible for financial aid.
