Dr. Pawola was Director of the Health Informatics (HI) program from 2007 to 2011 and Head of the BHIS Department from 2009 to July 2016 when he retired. He was responsible for planning, leading, and managing the HI online program’s development and the Department’s significant growth during this period. He continues to lecture and consult on health technology, distance education and online program development.

Dr. Pawola was a partner in an international professional services firm for many years and joined UIC in 2003. He specialized in health care information technology for over 35 years and has held clinical and executive management positions in acute care hospitals. He conducted research and managed numerous strategic planning, negotiations, and implementation projects throughout his career, and held the position of Chief Information Officer in both acute care and academic health systems. Dr. Pawola has delivered a variety of educational presentations to a number of professional and academic groups, has written numerous professional and peer-reviewed articles about his research, and has been quoted extensively in a variety of technology professional publications.
