Riley Jones

Growing up in the foothills of Colorado, drawing was Riley’s passion. He has always had a strong science interest and background with a Veterinarian Dad and Mom who is a Nurse. Finding a field that merged both art and science was serendipitous. At Iowa State University, he overheard a conversation between two students about Biological and Pre-Medical Illustration in an art class and changed his major the next day. Early on in college he decided on pursuing a master’s degree in biomedical visualization after graduation.

Currently in BVIS at UIC, he is building visual thinking and 3-D modeling skills. Riley’s current research project involves working with another BVIS student on modeling anatomical structures of the head for dentistry students for better visual understanding. His favorite project so far has been modeling a bust in Autodesk Mudbox. The program interface and molding of the digital clay was intuitive and very organic. Continuing to enhance his drawing techniques is also vital so drawing on a regular basis is an important part of Riley’s day to day activities.

In the future, Riley looks forward to working closely on texture mapping and creating high detail surface textures for 3-D models. After further developing his project research he wants to enhance these 3-D models in an augmented reality application for further visual education.
