Preparing the next generation of professionals in the field
We’re a clinical training site for graduate students in the fields of pediatrics, psychology, social work, counseling and speech language pathology.
Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND)
We’re a primary clinical training site for the Illinois LEND program. LEND is a federally-funded interdisciplinary training program that incorporates both didactic and experiential learning in clinical and community-based settings. It prepares future leaders in the areas of clinical learning, family centered care, public health and policy systems change.
Family Clinic social work internship
We offer internships to students interested in getting hands-on training with real-world clients. During your internship, you’ll participate in daily services of the clinic, working with our staff of professionals. In the past our interns have:
- Provided individual therapy to clients with developmental disabilities (DD) and co-morbid mental health and behavioral concerns
- Collaborated with a multi-disciplinary team to provide follow-up services to parents of children with DD
- Participated in group therapy (if group schedule allows)
Around 75% of our clinic’s visitors are from minority groups, and some also qualify as low-income. We serve a large population of Hispanics, and therefore bilingual (Spanish/English) students are encouraged to apply.

Family Clinic assessment practicum
Are you a student looking to expand and improve your diagnostic skills in developmental disabilities and autism?
Each year we accept three students to participate in our assessment practicum. For nine months (usually starting in September) you’ll work closely with our staff for 16 to 20 hours each week. Participate in seminars covering a variety of topics related to disabilities, psychological testing and use of specific testing tools (intellectual, academic, attention, visual motor, emotional functioning and other areas).
You’ll gain experience in all aspects of assessment:
- Conducting clinical interviews
- Administering, scoring and interpreting standardized tests
- Writing reports
- Case staffing
- Providing feedback to patients and families
Are you bilingual? We provide many of our services in Spanish, so you have a unique opportunity to learn administration and scoring of bilingual tests with supervision by bilingual psychologists.
